Viator Poems and Autocrats

In this post I present another recently invented poetry form! I'm looking closely at the Viator poetic form, first created by author,  Robin Skelton. The rules are fairly simple: The poem has four stanzas, each of four lines The first line is a refrain and that refrain appears as the second line of the second stanza, third line of the third stanza, and so on for however many stanzas the poem has... The final line of the final stanza being the refrain. My poem deals with matters so  clearly connected to current times and the concerning rise of autocrats.  Sometimes as poets we feel moved to adopt a stance as either resistor, observer or commentator on world events. These became words refusing to be trapped inside, sheltered in silence. Thank you, Viator for loaning me your structure! The Uncivil Acts Of Autocrats Thin skinned egotists Prevail in these times With endless outrage and fragile self-importance. Bizarre statements from Thin skinned egotists Seeking vengeance Upo...

Triversen Poem-The Continuing Conflict

Poets respond. They are frequently prompted by events occurring in the world around them. Local and global matters compel a poet to respond.  Therefore,  I find myself needing to write about the conflict once more taking place in the Middle East. I write from the perspective of innocent lives lost on both sides of this hideous, rolling conflict.  Poets have long written in the political sphere. This poem has been swirling around in my head all week. I must respond to this internal tension. These became words I felt compelled to write.  My poem is a triversen poem.  The Continuing Conflict   For the duration of my life this narrow strip of disputed land has been a conflict zone.   Daily atrocities pour forth from news reports, where innocent people fall victim and terror is written on children’s faces.   Wailing sirens duly announce the firestorm of destruction and the sky rains death.   Any thought of a two s...

Afghanistan Poem

Sometimes  poets  experience a strong need to respond to current events -global or local. Poets across many generations have frequently taken a position on matters enacting around them. They raise their voices, they speak out and  write their words.   Sometimes they are directly affected, at other times they are keen observers...  For this reason I felt compelled to write about the sad events currently occurring in Afghanistan, a country that has already endured two long decades of war and disruption. There is so much uncertainty surrounding life for the vast majority of the Afghan people. I am aware of my ineffectualness here, but I must speak my truth at this time.  I am both sad and angry regarding this lamentable outcome. My words reflect deep disillusionment regarding past and present actions. Life and poetry often converge in the thoughts arising from these emotional peaks and troughs we all encounter. Afghanistan Falling Weak resol...
